How Poster Works
She choose this poster because of the way it tells a story. This usually means it invites action, suggest motion or time, and conveys a point of view. The message this poster is telling us is about the Soviet designers promoting theater film using propaganda. Theater film was something important in those times for the soviets. They wanted to promote themselves to other people and places.
This poster shows the action, emotion, and sensation being embody through out the whole design. A example of this would be a drawing of the forest made by a American graphic designer named McKnight Coffer. For people to want to look at the forest drawing, they added a path in there. This is a convention that landscape artists all know and this is how to get people to enter the scene and really feel the drawing that there looking at. They also used a walking path instead of a motorcycle path which is another reason to help people connect. Every poster that uses story telling must have a certain message or have a meaning behind it. The message this poster is telling us is about the Soviet designers promoting theater film using propaganda.
She chose this poster because of the eye contact. Putting text over where the eyes shows less personality and makes the person seeing it not as interesting as putting eyes. When a designer uses this technic they want to show a bland personality or emptiness. She also uses this poster to compare the difference between a poster called "nude , nude, totally nude". Which is totally different from this poster because it has big bright red eyes. We have a social relationship with people and eye contact that also shows in posters with eyes. It makes us want to look at eyes even if there not real, which then makes us feel more emotionally connected. Another reason she used this poster was to compare it to a poster called "The Balcony". This poster " The Balcony" has eyes but there's text put over it that says the balcony. This gives it a dramatic effect and creates emotional tension. It would be very different if the text was put over something like his forehead. Eye contact is something important to have in a poster. Where you put the eye contact is also important as it can show very different things.
She chose this poster because it creates a central image. Lucien Bernhard created a 2 dimensional straight forward type of drawing/poster. This type of idea was also applied to other stuff that weren't advertising products. For example a poster called " Food is weapon" which talks about eating your vegetables and saving food and water for the war. This type of design was used for a important war posters. These type of posters help show an important point, break up blocks of text, and have a visual appeal. This is also very important for war posters. The drawings were bold and dynamic and made them stand out making it perfect to use for promoting ideas. Which is why is why Lucien Bernhard's idea was used a lot for war type of posters.
She chose this poster because the posters/drawings he made would overwhelm the eye. He would overwhelm peoples eyes either with the color or the structure of the poster. He studied with Josef Albert and learned that if you have to colors that almost the same value they would vibrate at the edges. This makes it hard for the eye to make sense of what its seeing. Victor Moscow and other psychedelic poster artists also liked this idea and used it making these that are informed by modern color theory. They became real icons of that era. Even designers now are trying to make letter forms into these swirly wild crazy letter types. This image above by "Michael Schuurman" is a good example of that. This is some of the experimental pieces that exist which are hard to look at. The way he did it is something way crazier than Helvetica on a grid. This idea of outlining and making form that has a kind of doubling around makes a explosion of energy that comes from inside the lines. Even now a lot of designers use this kind of effect.
She chose this poster because sometimes simplifying a drawing is a better choice. When people were asked to draw a picture of a coffee they threw a coffee cup and a coaster underneath it. Even thought we don't see it like that when were drinking coffee. So sometimes graphic designers try to find that thing in your brain and do something cool with it like this coffee cup drawing. Making it different and pop more then the other drawings. She also uses this to compare it to another poster called " Yusaku Kamekura" which is a lightbulb drawing. Instead of the traditional way of drawing a lightning bulb with light they drew a black lightbulb. After the black lightbulb they added a type of glow around it making it pop out and in a way to show light. It's a different way but at the end you still get a good result and its unique.
